Rules in a Nutshell

  • THE GAME
The aim of the game is to shoot a goal into the opponent's goal. The ball is a hard-rubber one. Each player is equipped with a lacrosse stick. There are two thirty-minute periods with a ten-minute half-break.

  • THE TEAM
There is a total number of 18 players on the team, but on the field can be maximum of twelve players including a goalkeeper.

  • START OF THE GAME
The game starts with the draw in the middle of the field. The draw is taken after each goal.

  • SUBSTITUTION
Any number of players may substitute at the half-time or after each goal. Unlimited substitution is possible also during the game.

  • REFEREES
There are three referees officiating each game.

  • FOUL
There are minor and major fouls. When a foul is called, all players have to stop and cannot move before the game is restarted. The team of a player who has made a foul looses possession of the ball and depending on the type of the foul, the fouling player may loose her good field position (a player causing major foul is positioned behind her opponent). For some fouls, a player may be carded, for repeated foul or unsporting behavior or foul a player may be suspended.

  • CONTACT
The allowed contact is stick-to-stick contact as far as it is not dangerous. Players are allowed to wear protective gloves and goggles while mouth-guard is mandatory. With the exception of a goalkeeper, other protective gear is not allowed.

  • OUT
The rule of out is the same as in other sport games, with the exception when the ball goes out-of-bounds after the shot. At this case the ball will get a player, who is, at the time the ball is going of bounds, nearest to the place where the ball has left the field.

  • THE FIELD

THE OFFSIDE LINES

There are two offside lines marked 27meters far from the goal line on each side. The offside rule allows maximum number of 8 attackers versus 9 defenders on the attacking side.

THE GOAL-CIRCLE

The goal-circle is a protected area where can be or play the ball only a goalkeeper or her deputy.

11- AND 15METER AREA

11meter area is a fan-shaped area with defensive three-second rule. This rule allows defender to remain in this area only if she is closely marking her opponent. In 15meter area a defender may not stay in so called "shooting space" of the player who is ready to make a shot. Rules of 11- and 15meter areas are to facilitate the safety of an offensive game in front of the goal. These rules are also determining aspects for both offensive and defensive team tactics and strategies.
