As in any other team and individual sport, a successful lacrosse player must master their craft. These fundamental skills of catching, passing, shooting and running that we have learned from our coaches, peers, or simply by observing are what separate the great players of today. Unlike so many athletes from so many other sports the lacrosse player must put an emphasis on the equipment. This entails so much more than just making an educated consumer purchase. Understanding how the equipment is supposed to function, what to do to maintain it, and how to make necessary adjustments so to develop the proper fundamentals is most important. Any truly great player takes pride in this. Most times when you see them, no matter if they’re playing or coaching you will always see them with their equipment in their hand. So now with a complete knowledge of how the equipment functions, he or she must learn proper technique and consistency in form. Although this may be accomplished in practice as a team, improvement comes from individual efforts made away from the team. Again the great players separate themselves by honing their skills of catching, throwing, and running in all situations and facets of the game, and while others are sleeping, eating, socializing, or working, the true lacrosse player is becoming great. Now achieving greatness in the sport of lacrosse is not made by simply repetitiously performing the necessary skills of the game, but rather learning and sharing all it’s nuances. It is a spiritual journey with the belief that you can always improve and there will always be better. Through coaching, officiating, playing, and observing, the lacrosse player learns to anticipate and gains the insight at how to capitalize on opportunities, and bring their game to a new dimension every time they enter competition. Without this dedication to the sport, success will be limited to be average at best, because just as in all other sports there exists someone with more skill, more power, or more knowledge and experience.
